Vivek Gilani, an Ashoka Fellow, an Environmental Engineer and a BEE Certified Energy Auditor based in Mumbai, also presented at the session as Invited SLA Expert. His presentation Looking past the illusion of efficiency, in pursuit of sufficiency linked technological innovations in the field of sustainability and climate change with the socio-economic realities of local urban lifestyles. He stressed the pivotal importance of the concept of ‘sufficiency’ in addressing the carbon emissions generated by affluent households in India through lifestyle change. He also stressed the need for the India specificity of emission data and measurement values in the calculation and reduction of footprints and in the concrete actions SLA suggests for local households, as they remain the basic units of the Indian lifestyle. Vivek has been associated with SLA and has shown eagerness to collaborate in future as well.
